Microforth Research Hub (MRH) is a center dedicated to fostering research activities, collaboration, and knowledge exchange in environmental health, public health and sustainable development. Microforth Research Hub (MRH) is to serve as a focal point for researchers, scholars, and experts to come together, share ideas, conduct investigations, and advance the knowledge and understanding of their respective fields in environmental health, public health and sustainable development.

Microforth Research Hub (MRH) is an independent organization poised to provide physical spaces, such as laboratories, libraries, and workstations, where researchers can work on projects environmental health, public health and sustainable development. Additionally, Microforth Research Hub (MRH) also offer resources and support services, such as funding opportunities, access to specialized equipment or databases, and administrative assistance.

History of Microforth Research Hub (MRH)

Microforth Research Hub (MRH) started initially as research training and assistant hub with researches in the various aspect of environmental and public health before developing into a full-fletched research group in 2023.

About the Founder

Oluwatosin ADEDEJI holds a BSc. in Microbiology, MSc. in Environmental Control and Management from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and currently rounding up his Masters in Public Health (MPH) program in Health Promotion and Education at the Univeristy of Ibadan. He has been involved in various researches in the environmental, public health and sustainable development fields such as bioremediation (enzyme remediation, phytoremediation), ecotoxicology, pest and vector management, water, air and soil quality, school health, non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, child and maternal health (EBF), adolescent and reproductive health with some of the researches published in reputable journals. He served on the national board of the International Students Environmental Coalition, a non-governmental, not for profit network of youths from over 30 countries of the world uniting against the menace called Climate Change, as the head of food working group in Nigeria and national secretary of various tree planting campaigns and advocacies including hosting a weekly 100% radio environmental progam on Oodua 90.9 FM and Great FM. He was a Youth Trainer with the DRASA (DrAmeyoStella Adadevoh) Health Trust WHO School AMR program where he trained 60 secondary school students and led campaign against the indiscriminate use and abuse of antimicrobials. He is currently the environmental manager at Awesomely Green Nigeria Ltd focused on environment-related research projects such as waste management, mini clean-up services, drainage and sewage maintenance, borehole construction, and wastewater treatments. He is a born-teacher with over 5 years teaching experience in secondary schools having taught subjects like mathematics, health education, geography, biology, economics and chemistry. He also taught Biometry, microbial ecology, microbial biochemistry and bacteriology at St. Louis University, Benin Republic (Nigeria Campus). He has also trained over 60 youths and students on research conceptualization writing, instruments development, data collection, statistics, research and the use of data analysis software like SPSS, Graphpad prism, atlas.ti, stata and R as well as introduction to data science and machine learning. He often collaborates with people from different fields like medicine, nursing, social sciences, special education and others.

Our mission is to be a leading independent Research Hub dedicated to investigating the complex interplay between environmental health, public health, and sustainable development. Through rigorous scientific inquiry, collaboration, and knowledge dissemination, we strive to provide evidence-based solutions, inform policy decisions, and empower communities to build healthier and more sustainable societies.

Our Focus

Microforth Research Hub focuses on three major all-encompassing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary fields.

1) Environmental Health: MRH focuses on the under listed aspects of environmental health using interconnected and multidisciplinary approaches involving public health professionals, policymakers, scientists, and communities to create and implement effective strategies for promoting a healthy environment and population.

·       Air Quality: Air pollution and the quality of indoor and outdoor air are important factors in environmental health. Harmful pollutants such as particulate matter, gases, and chemicals can have adverse effects on human health, leading to respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and other illnesses.

·       Water Quality: Ensuring clean and safe drinking water is crucial for public health. Monitoring and managing water sources, treatment processes, and distribution systems are essential to prevent waterborne diseases and contamination from pollutants, chemicals, and pathogens.

·       Food Safety: Environmental health includes the inspection and regulation of food production, handling, and preparation to prevent foodborne illnesses. This involves monitoring food sources, storage conditions, hygiene practices, and the implementation of food safety regulations.

·       Hazardous Substances: Environmental health addresses the exposure and management of hazardous substances, including toxic chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial pollutants. Assessing and mitigating the risks associated with these substances are critical for protecting human health and ecosystems.

·       Waste Management: Proper waste disposal and management are essential to prevent the spread of diseases, contamination of soil and water, and the release of harmful substances. Effective waste management includes waste reduction, recycling, safe disposal, and the treatment of hazardous waste.

·       Vector Control: Controlling disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and rodents is an important aspect of environmental health. Strategies include habitat management, vector surveillance, use of insecticides, and public education to prevent the transmission of vector-borne diseases.

·       Occupational Health: Environmental health extends to workplaces, focusing on ensuring the safety and well-being of workers. This involves assessing and managing workplace hazards, ergonomic considerations, exposure to toxic substances, and promoting practices that safeguard occupational health.

·       Climate Change and Resilience: Environmental health also addresses the health impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, rising temperatures, changing disease patterns, and their effects on vulnerable populations. It emphasizes adaptation strategies, resilience-building, and mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2) Public Health: MRH is poised towards fostering evidenced-based researches and collaboration among Public health professionals, healthcare providers, policymakers, communities, and other stakeholders to create healthier environments and reduce health disparities in the under listed aspects of Public health.

·       Epidemiology: The study of patterns, causes, and effects of health-related conditions and events in populations. It involves tracking diseases, identifying risk factors, and designing interventions to prevent and control them.

·       Disease Prevention and Control: Public health aims to prevent the occurrence of diseases and reduce their impact through strategies such as vaccinations, health education, and promotion of healthy behaviors. It also involves surveillance and response to outbreaks and infectious diseases.

·       Environmental Health: This field focuses on assessing and managing environmental factors that can affect human health, such as air and water quality, hazardous substances, food safety, and occupational health and safety.

·       Health Promotion and Education: Public health encourages healthy behaviors and lifestyles through educational campaigns, community programs, and policy initiatives. It aims to empower individuals and communities to make informed choices that improve their overall well-being.

·       Maternal and Child Health: Public health efforts target the health and well-being of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early stages of life. This includes prenatal care, immunizations, nutrition, breastfeeding support, and early childhood development programs.

·       Social Determinants of Health: Public health recognizes that factors like socioeconomic status, education, housing, and access to healthcare significantly impact health outcomes. Addressing these social determinants of health is crucial to reducing health disparities and promoting health equity.

·       Health Policy and Management: Public health professionals work on developing and implementing policies, regulations, and systems to improve the delivery of healthcare services, ensure quality, and enhance healthcare access and affordability.

·       Global Health: Public health efforts extend beyond national borders to address health challenges on a global scale. This includes collaborations to combat infectious diseases, strengthen healthcare systems, promote equitable access to healthcare, and respond to humanitarian crises.

·       Research and Evaluation: Public health relies on scientific research and evaluation to inform decision-making, measure the effectiveness of interventions, and advance knowledge in the field. This includes conducting studies, data analysis, and evidence-based policy development.

·       Reproduction and family health: Public health focus on family planning, prenatal care, maternal health, child health, reproductive health services, infertility Support, sexuality education, postpartum care and family support, parenting education, support groups, and community-based services in ensuring the well-being of individuals and families throughout their reproductive journey.

·       Population and Reproductive Health: Public health focus on reproductive health, family planning, safe and legal abortion services, preconception care, maternal and prenatal healthcare, prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual and reproductive rights, population dynamics, population and reproductive health initiatives to promote the well-being and rights of individuals in relation to their reproductive choices and the impact of population dynamics on health.

3) Sustainable Development: MRH is targeted at the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and poised to carry out researches and foster collaborations in the various under listed aspects of sustainable development to promote the well-being of present and future generations while ensuring the protection and preservation of the planet's resources.

·       Environmental Sustainability: This aspect focuses on the responsible management of natural resources, conservation of ecosystems, and mitigating environmental degradation. It includes efforts to address climate change, promote renewable energy, protect biodiversity, manage waste, and reduce pollution.

·       Economic Sustainability: Economic sustainability aims to foster inclusive and equitable economic growth that improves the quality of life for all while ensuring long-term stability. It involves promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns, supporting entrepreneurship and innovation, promoting fair trade, and reducing inequality.

·       Social Sustainability: Social sustainability emphasizes social equity, justice, and well-being. It involves ensuring access to basic needs such as education, healthcare, clean water, and sanitation for all individuals. It also focuses on eradicating poverty, reducing inequalities, promoting gender equality, and fostering inclusive societies.

·       Cultural Sustainability: Cultural sustainability recognizes the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural diversity, heritage, and traditional knowledge. It involves respecting and valuing diverse cultural expressions, promoting intercultural dialogue, and safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations.

·       Institutional Sustainability: Institutional sustainability entails the establishment of effective governance structures, policies, and frameworks that support sustainable development.
